The Fragile flower vase is a testament to the beauty that can be found in fragile materials. While fragile materials are typically not suited for mass-produced products, Yamamoto saw the unique appeal they possess. The attachment evokes a delicate beauty that is unmatched by other materials.
The realization of the Fragile flower vase involves a three-step process. First, the net fabric is cut to size. Then, it is carefully wrapped around a mold. Finally, a hot air gun is used to heat the fabric, sealing it into the desired shape. This discovery of using heat to transform the net fabric into a hardened form allowed Yamamoto to create the intricate 3D design of the Fragile flower vase.
The Fragile flower vase is designed to be versatile, with its size depending on the glass it is attached to. The standard dimensions are approximately 75×75×250mm. The net part of the attachment can be easily affixed to various sizes of drinking glasses, allowing for different combinations and unique visual experiences.
One of the main challenges Yamamoto faced during the design process was determining the optimal temperature for the hot air gun. Too low of a temperature would result in the net fabric losing its shape, while too high of a temperature would cause the fabric to melt. Through careful experimentation, Yamamoto found the perfect balance to ensure the integrity of the Fragile flower vase.
The Fragile flower vase made its debut at de bijenkorf and was exhibited at the Dutch Design Week in 2014. Its unique design and innovative use of materials garnered attention and recognition, leading to the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2016. This award is given to designs that demonstrate practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial requirements.
With Fragile, Takahiro Yamamoto has created a design that challenges conventional notions of fragility and showcases the inherent beauty found in delicate materials. This attachment allows anyone to effortlessly transform a simple drinking glass into a work of art, bringing a touch of elegance and sophistication to any space.
